The Barbados Red Cross Society recruits volunteers to carry out tasks that directly or indirectly help vulnerable people. Volunteering within national Red Cross societies is carried out by people who are committed to the fundamental principles and motivated by their own free will without the expectation of material or financial gain. Our volunteers serve vulnerable people and work work towards a more humane and peaceful world.
Recognising the importance of volunteers for Red Cross Red Crescent, the International Federation made the following pledge to the 27th International Conference of Red Cross and Red Crescent in November 1999.
Volunteers are the most important strength of any National Society; they are "the power of humanity" and the champions of Red Cross Red Crescent humanitarian values.
The Barbados Red Cross Society has different volunteer programmes, and requires different skills to make these programmes effective. Volunteers therefore have the opportunity to contribute their time and skills regularly or occasionally in the delivery of services, in resource mobilisation, administrative, governance or advisory functions.
Companies can also become corporate volunteers by providing pro-bono services and expertise to the Red Cross societies. Many companies with a sense of corporate social responsibility encourage their personnel to support a chosen cause. Staff are encouraged to dedicate their free time and in some cases financial resources to a cause that is dear to them. While no gain is to be expected, national Red Cross societies are committed to improving quality, standards, capacities and volunteer retention by creating a welcoming and socially inclusive environment.
